As we continue with the lockdown and self-isolation due to covid-19, Mandatory Care Services continues to deliver support to NDIS participants and prioritise support to meet the immediate needs of participants.

Under the guidance of NDIS and Department of Health, we are following every advice and information available to NDIS providers, complying with social distancing to ensure the safety of our community, participants and our staff.

According to the Premier of NSW Government, the state will be easing the current social distancing restrictions as of 1 May 2020, to allow two adults – and children –to visit other people for the purposes of care. The ease on restrictions will also allow elderly individuals and individuals with disability to socialise to ensure that people feel less isolated.

As an essential service, we are offering face to face services, where it is possible. However, we will continue to practice and remain extremely vigilant and respectful of the 1.5m social distancing while practicing strict hygiene.

If you are in self isolation or mandatory quarantine due to vulnerability or have been indicated by NSW Health and are struggling to afford food and groceries and do not have access to the delivery services. The state government can also help with an emergency relief package.
If you or anyone that you know is feeling unwell, have mild respiratory symptoms or have been around someone diagnosed with Covid-19. Please, contact your Doctor to arrange for a consultation.

For More information on our services, please contact 1300 627 111.
For more information on the current situation from federal and state government, please visit Health.gov.au and NSW.gov.au.

We recognise that this is a particularly anxious time for everyone and encourage you to contact us if you have any queries or questions.
The majority of our services are open, but in line with the new social-distancing measures, some services are being suspended to protect the health and wellbeing of staff and participants, while others are being adapted to new ways of delivery. An overview of our current services and supports is as follows:

ADJUSTED SERVICES
All services and supports provided by Mandatory Care Services (MCS) are tailored as per the requirements of the participants

ADDITIONAL  NDIA COVID-19 SUPPORT
The NDIA has announced a package of COVID-19 measures for NDIS providers and participants. These new measures will inject much-needed cash into the provider sector as it prepares for and responds to the challenges that COVID-19 will have on people with disability, their families and carers, and on providers and their workforces.
The new measures, to support participants, include:
• Plans to be extended by up to 24 months, to ensure continuity of support and to direct planning resources to urgently required plan reviews.
• Planning to be done via telephone meetings where possible.
• More flexibility in the use of capacity building funds (shifting it to core where necessary).
• An ‘action plan’ to ensure NDIS participants and families continue to receive essential disability supports.
To find out more information, visit the NDIS.gov.au.

PROTECTING YOUR HEALTH
Promoting good hygiene and adopting social-distancing measures are still the best form of defence against the virus. Aspect has adopted strict hygiene practices and is asking all our staff, students, participants and clients to follow the World Health Organisation’s recommendations to:
• Frequently wash hands using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub
• When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, or flexed elbow, then throw away the tissue immediately and wash your hands
• Avoid close contact with anyone who has a fever or cough
Any staff member, student, participant or client who is unwell should not attend an Aspect site, until all symptoms are completely resolved.

OUR ACTIONS
As part of the community and an essential Services mandatory Care Services has taken some actions to reduce the spread of COVID-19:
• Disinfecting the office and all company vehicles on regular basis
• Observing social distancing and reducing the number of people in the office to 3 at any one time

Funding Support

Services through which you may apply for financial aid for Assistive Technology, services or simply daily living.

Seniors

Services tailored specifically to help the elderly in a variety of ways.

Carers

Australia’s carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged. Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders (ATSIC)

There are a variety of services and resources specifically tailored to assist the elderly or disabled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Aboriginal people seek responsive service delivery to meet the identified needs and to provide Aboriginal people with choices that take into account cultural and individual preferences. A range of government grants and programs such as the Family Assistance Fund provides that can be used by families to purchase equipment and services (eg. assistive equipment, minor home modifications, household items, personal support services) that will help them to care for a child with a disability.

 Disability Rights

Many people will have a disability at some stage in their lives. For some, the disability will be temporary. Others may be affected for a lifetime.

Whatever the type of impact of a disability, everyone has the right to be an active member of their community and to have a say in the decisions that affect their lives.

Disability Services in Australia

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which Australia ratified in 2008, sets out the role of governments to make this a reality.

However, negative attitudes, physical barriers and difficulties accessing necessary supports still limit the opportunities of people with disabilities to find work, study, socialize and be included in community life.

In Australia, the Disability Discrimination Act protects people across Australia from unfair treatment in many areas of public life. It also promotes equal rights, equal opportunity and equal access for people with disabilities.

About people with disabilities

Around 6.8 million Australians (40 percent) aged 18 years and over report having a disability or long-term health condition.

Most people with disabilities (87 percent) are restricted in carrying out at least one everyday activity, such as self-care, mobility or communication.

The likelihood of having a disability increases as people age. For example, 7 percent of children aged under 15 years, 15 percent of people aged 15 to 64 years and over half (53 percent) of people aged 65 years and over report having some form of disability.

Key issues for people with disabilities

People with disabilities are more likely to experience poverty, live in poor quality or insecure housing and have low levels of education. They are often socially isolated, with fewer opportunities to take part in community life.

Mental health problems and mental illness are among the greatest causes of disability, diminished quality of life and reduced productivity.

Australia ranks lowest among OECD countries for the relative income of people with disabilities. Overall employment rates for people with disabilities remain low, with workforce participation at around 54 percent compared to 83 percent for people without disabilities.

In NSW, young people with mental health disorders and/or cognitive impairment are at least six times more likely to be in prison compared with young people without disabilities.

Despite progress towards making all public transport in Australia fully accessible by 2022, 1.2 million people with disabilities report difficulties using public transport.

Research has shown that more than a quarter of people who report sexual assault have a disability.[11] 90 percent of women with intellectual disabilities have been sexually abused.

Positive developments

Children with disabilities had significantly higher rates of participation in school compared to children without disabilities (82 percent and 77 percent respectively). This reflects a growing number of children with disabilities staying in school for longer.

Most people with disabilities (94 percent) have the support they need to live in private residences; 74 percent live with others and 20 percent live alone. People with disabilities are also more likely to own their own home outright (24 percent) compared with people who do not have disabilities (16 percent).

In July 2013, the National Disability Insurance Scheme was rolled out in Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria (Barwon area) and NSW (Hunter area). From July 2014, it will commence across the ACT and in the Northern Territory (Barkly region) and Western Australia (Perth Hills area). The full national scheme will commence progressively from July 2016.

Contact our friendly staff and see how we could benefit you in making your life happier, easier and healthier.

Everybody needs physical activity and exercise for good health. Most adults with disabilities are able to participate in physical activity, yet nearly half of them do not get any aerobic physical activity.

Physical activity plays an important role in maintaining health, well-being, and quality of life. Physical activity can help control weight, improve mental health, and lower the risk for early death, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.

NDIS Provider Australia

For people with disabilities, physical activity also can help support daily living activities and independence. All adults, with and without disabilities, need at least 2.5 hours per week of aerobic physical activity, at a moderate-intensity level, to gain many of these benefits.

People with Disabilities could suffer with:

  • Serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs
  • Deafness or serious difficulty hearing
  • Blindness or serious difficulty seeing
  • Serious difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
  • Difficulty doing errands alone
  • Difficulty dressing or bathing

Adults with disabilities are more likely to have heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or cancer than adults without disabilities. Physical activity can help reduce the impact of these chronic diseases.

Disability does not have to equal poor health. Most adults with disabilities are able to participate in regular physical activity; however, nearly half of all adults with disabilities do not get any aerobic physical activity.

Disabilities Services in Australia

If you have a disability and want to make physical activity part of your daily routine, here are some steps that you can follow:

Find Your Own Path to Physical Activity

Visit your doctor.

  • In consultation with a health care professional or physical activity specialist, people with chronic conditions or disabilities should understand how their disease or disability affects their ability to do physical activity.
    • Talk to your doctor about how much and what kind of physical activity is right for you.
    • Discuss your barriers to physical activity.
    • Ask your doctor to put you in contact with resources and programs to help you begin or maintain your physical activity.

Find out how much activity you need from the our certified experts .

Be active your way.

  • Some people with disabilities may be capable of doing a substantial amount of physical activity;
    • Decide how much physical activity is right for you and your fitness level.
    • Decide what kind of physical activity you enjoy, for example, general gardening, doing chores around the house, wheeling yourself around in your wheelchair, walking briskly, dancing, and playing wheelchair basketball, tennis, or soccer.
    • Find ways to include your favorite physical activity into your everyday life.

Start slowly.

  • If you are an adult with chronic conditions or disabilities, you should engage in regular physical activity according to your ability.
    • Start slowly based on your ability and fitness level. For example, be active for a few minutes at a time, and then slowly increase the time you are active over several weeks, if necessary.
    • Do what you can to get active! Some activity is better than none!

Have fun with family and friends.

  • It is easier to stay active with the support of family and friends.
    • Invite your loved ones to be active with you. For example, together you can dance, play outside with a ball, or walk or wheel around the neighborhood.
  • Join our social activities, contact us to find out more.

What is Disability?

Disability does not depend on a human being. But obstacles hinder people with an impairment.

These are people who, for example, cannot see well, go bad or hear badly.

An example:

A blind person needs a blind traffic light. Then he can walk across the street alone. Or he needs a ballot slip in the blind script. Then he can choose alone.

Often there are no blind traffic lights. There are no election papers in the blind script. This hinders the blind man.

Who is a disabled person?

There are people who can, for example, go bad or not at all. You cannot see well, hear badly. You can learn badly. Or they are mentally ill.

Or they are chronically ill. Or they have the disease AIDS. Or they are old and can walk badly.

In the world, there are many obstacles for these people. Because of the obstacles, they cannot participate equally in the life of society.

People used to think, disability is a disease. The illness was then the problem of the sick person.

Today we say: If a ramp is missing, it hinders people in wheelchairs. If there is no information in easy language, it hinders people with learning difficulties.

The state and society must overcome the obstacles. Then people with disabilities can participate more and more everywhere.

More than half a year, people may be worse off, worse at seeing, hearing, or thinking that other people their age. For example, a cross-sectional paralysis is a disability. People cannot participate in society because of their disability.

This law is important. When people have a disability, the state supports them. For example, he pays the wheelchair for people who cannot walk.
